If you are unable to work because of an illness, injury or impairment, the federal government offers benefits through two programs: the Social Security Disability Insurance program (SSDI) and the Supplemental Security Income program (SSI).

The Social Security Administration provides monthly disability payments to people deemed “disabled.” If you have a serious illness, injury or impairment that prevents you from working, you may qualify for these Social Security benefits.
